Over time the family resided in England, Australia, then back to England, from there they went to South Africa before coming back to England again.
In England he attended Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital School in Bristol and while there he excelled in history achieving an A in his O-level examination, he also showed promise in some the theatre productions there.
In 1976 at the age of 16 his family moved permanently back to Australia where he attended the Knox Grammar School to finish his education. In 1981 he graduated from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) and has since then worked extensively in film, television and theatre.
